The Digestive System
Class 2 have taken part in an experiment to enhance their learning about the digestive system. They cut a slice of bread into pieces and added water to simulate saliva, they then mashed it up with a fork to represent the molars. It was then put into a sealed plastic bag (the stomach), orange juice was added to represent stomach acid, and food colouring was added as stomach enzymes. The mixture was then put into the leg of a pair of tights (the small intestine) with more food colouring as bile. The children squashed the water out of the mixture and then squeezed it down the leg of the tight, as if it was food moving through the intestine. The last part of the experiment was to cut the toe out so the mixture could be squeezed out!!
This really brought the children's learning to life, and I am sure they will always remember how the digestive system works.
